Trump's Progressive Warning Overlooks The Continent's Real Threat: Economic Stagnation.

The recent US national security strategy presents a misguided assessment of the European Union. The document asserts that open-border policies and so-called "progressive" policies represent an grave threat to European civilization. However, this perspective is based on a serious misreading of the reality. The actual challenge facing the EU is not cultural but technological and economic backwardness.

The Stark Economic Gap Between the US and Europe

Statistics paint a sobering contrast. From 2008 and 2023, American economic output surged by 87%, while a paltry 13.5% increase for the EU. Over this period, EU GDP per capita dropped from over three-quarters to just half of the American figure. Strikingly, even Mississippi now boasts a higher per capita income than major EU nations like France and Italy.

Currently, roughly half of the global top fifty tech companies are American, while only four are European.

The Technological Shortfall: A Critical Question

The growing disparity is driven by superior efficiency gains in the United States, largely due to technological innovation and higher total factor productivity. The scene of global tech dominance is decidedly American. In the last fifty years, 241 US firms have scaled into enterprises valued at over ten billion dollars, versus only fourteen in the European continent.

This gap prompts a vital issue: In the race for tomorrow's sectors like semiconductors, AI, and quantum computing, what is Europe stand? Experts widely agree it is essentially a two-horse race involving the US and China, with Europe entering at a significant handicap.

Underlying Factors of Europe's Technological Lag

A number of key reasons account for this innovation chasm.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The US boasts a much more robust and more dynamic system for funding startups. The EU still lacks a genuine capital markets union, a factor that caps the growth potential of new firms.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Complex and divided regulation hinder European business. A US startup can launch a product under a single set of laws to access a market of hundreds of millions. The European Union, despite a larger population, is divided among 27 separate systems, creating significant internal barriers.
  • Mindset Differences: Attitudes toward entrepreneurial failure vary greatly. In parts of Europe, a startup's collapse was once viewed with stigma, whereas in the United States, it is often seen as a badge of experience.
  • Defense Spending: The United States enjoys a tightly woven innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. Europe's chronic underinvestment in defense has eroded its ability in pioneering research.

A Path Forward: Reasons for Hopefulness

In spite of these hurdles, there are causes for optimism. European leaders are increasingly aware of the existential challenge and have begun to propose serious reform. Key reports on EU competitiveness and the internal market highlight the need for major changes.

With the right incentives and regulatory reforms, Europe's strengths could support much higher levels of business-led breakthroughs.

The continent retains considerable strengths: high-quality workforce, excellent schools and universities, and premier research institutions. Alongside a large internal market and high savings rates, these foundations could unleash a surge of venture creation.

Crucially, even if the EU does not become the leader in creating cutting-edge tech, it can still dramatically increase productivity by adopting and adapting advancements from elsewhere.

An Inflection Point

The European Union now stands at a decisive moment. To paraphrase a famous line, decline often happens "gradually and then suddenly". So far, the continent's technological decline has been steady. But, if it fails to take bold steps to tackle its structural weaknesses, today's gradual weakening could turn into a sudden and irreversible decline in global economic relevance.
