Royal Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a coordinated attack on an subterranean weapons facility in Syria used by the IS group, per a report from the British defence ministry.

The location, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was positioned in mountains just above the ancient city of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a several entry passages providing entry to the site... early reports indicate the strike was effective," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the strike on Saturday evening and every plane involved returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - established jihadist rule over large swathes of Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike shows the UK's leading role, and resolve to operate in unison with our partners, to eradicate any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary stated.

RAF aircraft have conducted surveillance missions over Syria to "deter any attempted resurgence" of Islamic State subsequent to its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank the personnel of British forces involved in this strike for their professionalism and their valour," Healey said. "They were among numerous British personnel on duty over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to take out militants who pose a risk to our safety, demonstrates how our armed forces are always on standby, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure domestically and powerful internationally."

In December, the American forces carried out what it termed a "large-scale strike" against Islamic State objectives in Syria, following an attack resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The U.N. reports Daesh still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in Syria and Iraq.
