Approximately 50 automobiles have been covered with what appears to be blood from a person in the German city of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, as reported by authorities.

Cars, walls and postal boxes were vandalized, in some cases with swastikas, they reported in a release.

Law enforcement state they were notified during the night on Wednesday, when a individual discovered that a vehicle in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been marked with a reddish fluid.

The substance had been placed in the shape of a swastika, they reported.

Officers then discovered many other smeared vehicles and residential walls in the surrounding area.

Nazi symbols are prohibited in Germany under legislation banning the public display of symbols from the Nazi era.

Police state initial examinations show the substance was likely human blood.

"There is still no lead as to where it came from; investigators are currently not cognizant of any harm in relation with the event," they commented.

Local authorities stated they were working "to unravel the mystery" and have appealed to the community for tips.

An important official commented the attack made him speechless and needed to be resolved promptly.

"This act strikes at the very heart of Hanau and reopens the trauma of the extremist terrorist attack half a decade ago," he stated on online, mentioning the murder of nine victims by a gunman focusing on people of foreign heritage in February 2020.
